At what point do cells become beings?

I must admit that I myself am deeply divided on the issue, principally because I cannot answer this question definitively. On one hand it seems counterintuitive to declare that from the moment the sperm and egg merge they become a human being, yet on the other, if not a sperm and egg and 9 months time... what's in a baby?

Perhaps it isn't a baby at all without an incubation time long enough to allow the fetus to inherit a sentient awareness. If anyone would care to illustrate definitively when that is though I'd like to know.
