: A good friend just got back from visiting her family in Thailand, and she says the best part (aside from heaping plates of Goon Phad prig-Pao for 60 cents ;-) is that the pace of life is so much slower. She was visiting her Uncle's village of a few hundred people, and the days were spent eating, taking care of the kids, washing, eating more, watching the sunset, and then sleeping. She came back and was instantly surrounded by thousands of people all going somewhere "important" in a huge hurry, none of whom knew her or cared about her.
: Another friend from Thailand once told me how confused he was by Americans because they always ask "how are you?" but never stop to hear the answer. His idea of appropriate behavior was, if someone asked this question, the two of you should go sit and have coffee or tea for a few hours while you answer.
: IMHO, that beats the bejeesus out of Los Angeles, no? ;-)

SDF: Oh, I'm sure it does... I'm just so acculturated to being here. I'm kind of screwed up in the digestive area, south of the stomach, so that caffeine and alcohol and excessively greasy food beat me to a pulp, headaches, diarrhea etc., so I don't know... capitalist medicine is more concerned with insurance money than with my problem... I enjoy tweaking the car commuters by speeding past their trafficjams on my bicycle every morning, I enjoy tweaking the small imaginations of the cookie-cutter teachers I see each day... maybe I'll die soon and the whole thing will be a moot issue...
