Human testing?

Posted by: Darya ( USA ) on October 01, 1999 at 10:55:55:

Since there are so many posts about animal testing in here, and since I live smack dab in the middle of a major center of medical research (believe it or not-Pittsburgh!), I see advertisements for human research participants all the time. My question is this: should we forgo all animal testing in favor of human testing? Subjects would be paid of course, and if we got rid of all live testing whatsoever, about 75% of research in medicine would grind to a halt.
Hmm how about we experiment on society's "undesirables," such as criminals convicted of serious crimes?
Let's face it, there IS no easy answer to the research question. Yes, it is cruel to subject animals to research. But would it be fair to obtain humans for all kinds of tests, forcibly or voluntairly?
Let's hear your thoughts.
