Victory in the Sacramento Valley!Rocklin, CaliforniaIn the Sacramento Valley city of Rocklin, California, a group of residents was successful in efforts to keep McDonalds out of the neighborhood. McDonalds had planned to build a double drive-thru within a mile of six schools. Neighbors organized their opposition -- getting 1,000 signatures on petitions, taking pictures of the present traffic congestion, and researching everything from safety concerns to pollution control. Working together in their 'spare' time, over a period of about six months, members of the Stanford Ranch Community were able to persuade the Rocklin City Council -- on June 26, 2001 -- to reject the McDonalds plan, setting an important precedent. Within a week, Del Taco withdrew its application to locate a drive-thru in the same neighborhood. |
