6 Backyard, which is a journal of the Grassroots Movement
for environmental justice?
7 A. That is correct.
8 Q. It is published by the Citizens Clearing House for
Hazardous Waste?
9 A. That is correct. Can I clarify, the Citizens Clearing
House for Hazardous Waste is based -- was based until 1990
10 in Arlington, Virginia, at which point following it is now
based in Falls Church, Virginia, outside Washington DC.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: What is that body?
12 A. The Citizens Clearing House for Hazardous Waste is an
organisation founded in 1980 by a woman named Lois Gibbs.
13 This particular person was one of the residents of the
community in up state New York, generally known as Love
14 Canal, which is in the Buffalo area of New York; it was a
community that was contaminated by dumping in the 50s by a
15 company called Occidental Petroleum. Subsequently, during
the late 1970s, from 1978 to 1979, residents became aware
16 of that, and organised to get evacuated from that
neighbourhood. Lois went on to form this organisation in
17 order to provide groups with the technical and organising
assistance they needed in order to deal with this sort of
18 problem.
19 MISS STEEL: Since 1990 I think you have written a number of
books on pollution and related topics, waste disposal --

21 A. That is correct.
