Day 018 - 26 Jul 94 - Page 04

1 in relation to the conditions in which animals used for
McDonald's food are reared and slaughtered, right?
     2 A. Yes.

3 Q. Have you considered the requirements which McDonald's
impose on their suppliers of meat products?
4 A. Through the specifications that McKey Foods, for
              example, produced, yes.
     5
         Q. What I would like you to do, please, is to take -- you
6 will find some pink files in the shelves behind you; can
you find the one which is marked in large Roman XI? It is
     7 entitled Rearing and Slaughtering?
              A. IX?
     8
MR. JUSTICE BELL: IX, I think.
     9
MR. RAMPTON: Can I ask you, first of all, to turn to tab 1 in
10 that document in that file?
              A. Yes.
    11
         Q. I do not need to read it out; if you can just remind
12 yourself. Have you seen it before?
              A. Yes.
    13
         Q. Can you read it to yourself and remind yourself of its
    14 contents?
              A. Yes.
    15
         Q. Can I just ask you this: Looked at from the animal
16 welfare point of view, in broad terms and leaving aside
the question whether those requirements are adhered to in
17 practice, does this statement seem to you a satisfactory
or an inadequate statement in relation to the welfare of
    18 animals?
              A. Bearing in mind this is a specification from a
    19 retailer, this seems sound.

20 Q. Thank you. If you turn over the page you will see a
summary of McDonald's suppliers' (that is with S
    21        apostrophe) positions:  Beef, the supplier is McKey;
chicken, it is a firm called Sun Valley, and then there is
22 something about eggs and something about fish and bacon,
but again can I ask you to look at the headings Beef and
23 Chickens? Ignore the bits which do not concern animal
welfare. I do not worry about those.
24 A. I will have to go through this to identify which is
              which.
    25
         Q. Unfortunately, they are not numbered so it is best that
26 you just read it to yourself.
              A. Yes.
    27
MR. JUSTICE BELL: Who is this document 1 directed at,
    28 Mr. Rampton?

29 MR. RAMPTON: I am a bit puzzled by that. I was hoping your
Lordship was not going to ask me that because I am not
30 even sure I know what its origin is.
