Day 025 - 16 Sep 94 - Page 03

       many milligrams there are there?
       A. Yes, in the Hazelton 1986 report the milligrams for
       sodium are also 743.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: I have not found that in the analysis.

MS. STEEL: It is under "Sandwiches", the second one along.

  MR. JUSTICE BELL: Yes, 743.

MS. STEEL: Then if you could look at McNuggetts in the
advertisement, it is 512 milligrams; is that right?
       A. In the 1987 ad, yes.

  Q. If you look under "Chicken McNuggetts", which is the first
one in the middle section of this page in the Hazelton
report, that is 512 as well?
       A. Yes.

  Q. Finally, looking at the vanilla milk shake which in the
advertisement states 201 milligrams of sodium, we also
find that in the last chart on the nutritional analysis
under "other items"; the fourth one along is vanilla milk
shake, that is also 201 milligrams; is that right?
       A. In the Hazelton study, yes, also 201.

  Q. So, looking at that, it would appear what you wrote in
       your letter is correct?
       A. Yes.

  Q. Or what the Attorney General wrote. Then going on to the
argument yesterday about sodium hexametaphosphate -- you
should not need the large bundle any more.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Do we know just what the dates are?

  MS. STEEL: It says 1986.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: I appreciate that. But if an analysis was
done in 1986 those might actually be the figures which
appear in ads starting in the middle of January 1987. Do
       you see what I mean?

MS. STEEL: That is actually the point.

  MR. JUSTICE BELL: Yes.

MS. STEEL: He said that he had written the letter based --
I mean, he said this yesterday -- on looking at their
       documents, at their nutritional information.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Do we know, for instance, what the position
was in 1985? Do you yourself have a source of information
as to whether the ads were actually working on the 1986
survey or compared with 1985? You see, I realise the
point which is being made, but if, for instance, this
analysis is the latest analysis that McDonald's had when
the ads were prepared and, in fact, on the analysis a year
previous to this the sodium had been higher, they might
pray that in aid. I just do not know. You see the point
