Day 069 - 19 Dec 94 - Page 05

normal procedure would be that the documents would be
discovered and Mr. Rampton would have the option at least
of leading evidence-in-chief as to that. Leaving aside any
comment about the direction of Mr. Morris'
cross-examination, obviously some things might be explained
in any further questioning in chief which would avoid
questions in cross-examination which were merely seeking an
explanation of what the documents are. What do you say
       about that?

MS. STEEL: All I was going to say was that, realistically
speaking, we are not going to finish today, in any event,
so we are very happy for Mr. Rampton to go through them
today, if he wants to do that, and can do that now.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Why do you not do it now, so that we are not
       breaking into cross-examination?

MR. RAMPTON: That means that whatever embarrassment I feel
about the late discovery -- at any rate, the first of the
new documents I have handed in -- in is to some extent
       mitigated.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Might I suggest that at some stage all these
documents -- that is, the ones that were handed up by
Mr. Morris and the ones which you have handed up this
morning, and the Humane Slaughter of Livestock, the very
small bundle which was handed in a few days ago -- go into
one small additional exhibits bundle which can have
Dr. Gomez Gonzalez' name on the other side.

MR. RAMPTON: Or else, my Lord, we can put into the pink Rearing
       and Slaughter file.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: If there is enough room.

MR. RAMPTON: I do not think it is a very fat file, my Lord. In
addition to those regulations which your Lordship has there
and had held up a moment ago, your Lordship should also
have a rather blotchy copy of the Act itself and its 1978
       amendment.

  MR. JUSTICE BELL: Very well.

MR. RAMPTON: What I suggest we do during the next few days, or
during the vacation, is to put them into that pink file and
give them new tab numbers and add those to the index.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Perhaps someone can organise that with
       Mr. Styles, as is convenient.

MR. MORRIS: Before we start, I did prepare the list of the
things we wanted to bring up tomorrow, legal matters.

                    DR. GOMEZ GONZALEZ, continued
                   Further examined by MR. RAMPTON

  Q. Dr. Gomez Gonzalez, do you have that bundle anywhere around
       in any of those shelves?
       A. No, I do not.
