Day 090 - 16 Feb 95 - Page 06

cases would just involve challenge after challenge to oral
and a call for documentation to support the statements made
in oral evidence. That really would or could bring the
system grinding completely to a halt.

MS. STEEL: The other point I wanted to make was that
Mr. Rampton pointed out these documents in tab 8. As I did
say last night, they are illegible.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: I appreciated that.

MS. STEEL: All the older ones are illegible. Actually, I did
ask at the time -- can you just let me finish?

MR. RAMPTON: My Lord, no, that is not so -----

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Please let her finish, nevertheless,
       Mr. Rampton.

MR. RAMPTON: I am sorry, my Lord, but, I mean, it just is not
       so.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: I have had to ask the Defendants to sit down
when you are speaking. We have to follow the normal
       procedure. Yes?

MS. STEEL: As far as I recall, I did ask it at the time that
better copies of these be provided. They have obviously
come through a fax machine so it may be that if we could
get the ones before they came through the fax machine, if
they could be sent by post, we would be able to read them.
I think that is what the problem is, just that we have ---

MR. JUSTICE BELL: What I would like you to do ---

  MS. STEEL: -- illegible copies.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: -- is identify the particular copies which
you cannot read here and now. I do not care if it takes
you a minute or two or a few minutes to do so. Then
perhaps Mr. Atkinson would be kind enough to take a note of
them -- he will be able to run them back up on his screen
-- and, hopefully, an effort will be made to get better
copies. Give us the bundle and pages.

MS. STEEL: It is pink VIII, tab 8, page 67 and page 68.
I thought Mr. Rampton said there was another for 1990.

  MR. RAMPTON: Page 80.

MS. STEEL: Page 74 is not too bad, page 80.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: What have we got, 73 and 74? Do not just
pick the ones which are really impossible. Pick any one
you have difficulty with. At the moment I have just got 67
       and 68.

MS. STEEL: Page 74, page 75, page 80, I think that is it.

MR. RAMPTON: My copies of 74 and 75 are perfectly legible.
