  Q. OK.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Did that mean that promoted to Chief
Superintendent you went to be in charge of your own
       division?
       A. Correct, my Lord.

MS. STEEL: What division was that?
       A. This was M Division. The police station was Carter
Street, which is now Woolworth; prior to that I was at
Brixton where I served with Mr. Nicholson for a period.

  Q. Was it Mr. Nicholson who invited you to come and join
       McDonald's?
       A. No. The original chief officer of the company,
Mr. Ray, invited me to join McDonald's.

  Q. Bob Ray?
       A. That is right.

  Q. You became Security Manager in September 1984 which was
       when you joined the Company?
       A. That is right.

  Q. What position was Mr. Nicholson in relation to you at that
       time?
       A. That time he was Head of Personnel and I actually
reported to him for a while.

  Q. As Head of Personnel?
       A. He had Personnel, Security and Franchising were his
       three departments.

  Q. Right. That was in September 1984?
       A. Yes.

  Q. You said you first became aware of the leaflet that is the
subject of this action in 1987.

MR. RAMPTON: My Lord, what he said in court yesterday was that
he first saw it probably in about 1985 or 1986.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: I think Ms. Steel is looking at his
       statement.

MR. RAMPTON: I know. When she said "you said", I took it it
was a reference to the evidence.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: It is up to Ms. Steel whether she pursues any
       distinction between them.

  MR. RAMPTON: Yes, of course.

MS. STEEL: Right. I meant "you said" as in "you said in your
       statement".

  MR. JUSTICE BELL: Yes.

MS. STEEL (To the witness): Your statement is incorrect in that
