Day 239 - 23 Apr 96 - Page 05

hope still do to this day, I am wholly abreast of the
important and pertinent issues there. I have maintained a
       strong ----

MR. JUSTICE BELL: I think that is probably enough for a start
       anyway.
       A. I beg your pardon, sorry.

MR. MORRIS: You said you have a continuing interest in Brazil.
Are you going back there at all?
       A. I am going back at the end of May to keep, as I have
been for some time, updating myself on what is going on out
       there.

  Q. I believe you have worked specifically on mahogany issues?
       A. That is certainly one of the areas of my particular
interest. What I was interested in doing was examining the
claims of mahogany traders in this country that the wood
was sustainably produced and environmentally friendly and I
       have followed it back.

  Q. I am just trying to say that for that reason you have
       maintained studies?
       A. Absolutely, that is correct. I have maintained studies
and kept myself in touch with what is going on out there.

  Q. Have you won any other awards for your research?
       A. Last year I was awarded the United Nations Global 500
Award. It is considered a very prestigious award for
Environmental Research. It is meant to be for a lifetime's
environmental research, but I hope I have not got there
yet. It was presented to me by Nelson Mandela.

  Q. I am going to read your statement through. If there is
       anything incorrect ----

MR. JUSTICE BELL: We had better get it down as well. Would you
mind getting one of the pale blue volumes. It is the one
with the "1C" on it, please, Mr. Monbiot, and if you turn
to divider G and then, within that, divider 3, please?
       A. I have got it.

  Q. Your original statement for the purposes of these
proceedings and the various addenda should all be there.

MR. MORRIS: Should we just check we have all got the first
statement? The first statement is signed 21.7.1993; that
is 3 pages. Have you got that one first?
       A. Yes.

  Q. Then there is an addendum which is short, 3 paragraphs?
       A. Yes.

  Q. Then there is another addendum regarding soya production in
       Brazil?
       A. Yes.

  Q. Dated?
       A. November 1993, yes.
