Day 249 - 14 May 96 - Page 39

things like that, and that the Company had found out it was
all locally based. That was as a result of ----
       A. They may very well have used their local contacts to
       determine that.

  Q. Right.
       A. But I personally have not spoken to anyone in the
police service about anybody in this operation.

  Q. Apart from about myself and Mr. Gravett?
       A. Well, they volunteered that information to me.

  Q. For the purposes of this case, and matters related to the
counterclaim and the main action, have you received
information for your company -- not you personally, your
department, either the security department or you because
you are responsible for this case within the Company --
have you received information from the police -- about
protests or leafleting, or leaflets distribution?

MR. JUSTICE BELL: So far as you are aware?
       A. No, it may... I mean, police attend when we have
demonstrations, police attend when there is a disturbance
outside the store, but I have never... And we get
information saying that we have heard there is going to be
a picket at your store, or something like that. That kind
of thing happens, but nothing more than that.

MS. STEEL: What about further contact with the Special Branch,
did they come to any of the later pickets?
       A. I do not know. That is really a question you should
       direct at Terry Carroll.

  Q. What about more information from the Special Branch?
       A. No, not me.

  Q. Not you?
       A. No.

  Q. Not even as the person in charge of this case you are not?
       A. No. I got a distinct impression they were not
       interested in this case.

MR. MORRIS: Would Terry Carroll have had meetings with the
Special Branch since this case started?
       A. About the case?

  Q. Relevant to ----
       A. I would be surprised.

  Q. -- the issues in the case, or publication or whatever?
       A. I would be surprised.

  Q. There is nothing to stop him having meetings with Special
       Branch then at all?
       A. There is nothing to stop him having meetings with
Special Branch, but I do not expect him to discuss our
business with any officer, whether it be Special Branch or
otherwise, without my knowledge. Especially this case,
       this was my case.
