Day 255 - 23 May 96 - Page 04

       A. Yes, I do.

  Q. This does not appear to stem from London Greenpeace?
       A. No, I do not think it did. This is one of the
Elkington books and that was a separate issue.

  Q. One of whose books, sorry?
       A. Elkington.

  MR. JUSTICE BELL: One of?
       A. Elkington, my Lord, is the author or co-author of the
       book.

MS. STEEL: This was published in 1987 with the date of action as
       June 1989?
       A. Yes.

  Q. Do you remember that as being the date of action?
       A. No, not really.

  Q. Do you know whether you would have waited 2 years to take
action or whether it was just that you did not find out
       about it until 19?
       A. No. I am trying to bring it back now. I think the
reason for 1989 is that what first came to our knowledge,
I am not sure of this, was the Green Consumer Guide, which
was John Elkington's better known publication, and it was
as a result of taking action against that, but we had a
meeting with John Elkington when he agreed to reprint both
versions taking out the allegations against McDonald's and
       the rainforests.

If you see "action" on both books were in June 1989 and
that was the result of the meeting that we had.

  Q. That is number 8; is it?
       A. Yes.

  Q. I see, so it was when he published the Green Consumer Guide
        ----
       A. -- The Green Consumer Guide. I am sure that was the one
that was brought to my attention and we came across another
one as a result of that enquiry.

  Q. Again, while we are on it, tab 8 does not appear to be from
       London Greenpeace?
       A. No. I have never associated it with London Greenpeace.

  Q. What it says in tab 8, the bit that you sued over?
       A. We did not sue.

  Q. Well, wrote a solicitor's letter over?
       A. I am not sure that we did that actually. I remember
having a meeting with Elkington and his publishers.

  Q. Right. Presumably you would not have been able to arrange
that without first writing a letter?
       A. We may have written to him inviting him to come and
       talk to us.
