The word "Copt" comes from the Egyptian translation of the Greek "Aegyptos" (contrary to what most Americans think, Egyptians don't call their country "Egypt"). Christianity was introduced to North Africa during the first century reign of Nero. It is based on the teachings of St. Mark. Some informative links on the Coptic church include the Encyclopedia Coptica, the Coptic Network, and a site run through Harvard on Coptic Christianity.

(Here I'm demonstrating that, despite what some regular visitors to Mc.S. seem to believe, I actually am quite knowledgable about religion and really don't need them to explain it to me ;-)
