I find it interesting the way our society views the poor. The Premier of Ontario, Mike Harris is vowing to tackle Toronto's problem: squeegie kids. He says he will get tough with these "aggressive beggars" and throw the book at them. Nevermind that these young people are trying to earn money in some form. Obviously our politicians (and Mr Cleaver) are drastically out of touch with the poor and the homeless.

Once again those in power are coddling their middle class electorate, winning votes by helping them to place the blame on society's victims. These children have grown up in poverty, and what do they get? The wrath of a government that represents big business and elite interests. Now we can all sleep easier, knowing that those "seedier elements of society" are locked up. Our consciences are clean, or at least the evidence that should remind us of our moral responsibilities has been swept under the rug.
