OK, some good points, BUT... don't forget that at the time all this happened democracy did not exist in England. The common people had no say in what parliament did - ditto the judiciary, which existed to reinforce the privileges of the landed gentry, so the lawyers of the time were certainly not representative of the people of England - the pool from which the convicts which were transported came from. I guess if they were asked at the time they would rather not have been sent to Australia. As for ill treatment of the Aborigines, well I guess you guys presently running the show down there are squeaky clean huh ? If you all really felt the Aborigines were (are ?) hard done by, what's stopping you giving them there land back ? Lastly, as for the original comment about present day lawyers in the UK, sure we do get things wrong from time to time but fortunately the benefit of the doubt is usually given to the accused here - probably because trial by jury favours the underdog.
