Here are my thoughts ( and they're just that) on good deeds. The Bible tells us that faith without works is dead. Christianity's assertion that salvation is free means that you can't work your way to heaven.
Suppose for example that I am heavily tempted by things of the world - be it money, hate or pride. I find myself sinning over and over again. But at the same time I love God and try hard to do better. God's forgiveness is free because of my faith. Now take the guy down the street who is always doing good deeds, is perhaps never tempted by the "pleasures of the flesh" but at the same time feels some pride in the fact that he is so wholesome or maybe he doesn't feel much compassion for others. His good deeds won't earn him salvation.
If you truly have faith that Jesus Christ is God's son then wouldn't it be assumed that you would try to live as he did thus doing good deeds? Not to win your way to heaven but because you love Christ?
