Many of the founding fathers were Masons.

The Masons have had a lot of influence in the development of the New World and later on the U.S. Many of the founding fathers were Masons. The first charter companies were started and financed by Masons. The list goes on.
As to whether or not they were (are) trying to establish a sort of elite, no one really knows. They guard their secrets quite well.
I come from a long line of Free Masons. I am the first in five generations to decide not to join.
