Today pork, tomorrow the world

There has been, in the UK press, a campaign by UK farmers to demonstrate how hard done by they are when trying to compete with imported meat. They cite the fact that foreign producers don't have to abide by animal welfare and hygiene laws so can undercut UK prices. This is good news because if this carries on it will be totally unprofitable to produce pork in this country, leaving imported meat as the only source. UK consumers will not buy expensive British pork, leaving foreign producers to fight it out among themselves - which will surely lead to further instances of pigs being fed cheaper and cheaper feed (sewage presumably). I predict this will lead eventually to a boycott of pork by our consumers, disgusted by what they might be consuming themselves when they eat the stuff. The fact remains that if meat is to be regarded as a consumer product then manufacturers will always seek to maximise profits by reducing costs -feedstuffs- but our public is at last beginning to see through their chicanery. If this happens with pork it will hopefully carry on through to other meat products. Then, perhaps, farmers will come to realise that instead of wasting thousands of acres on grazing cattle they could make a good living by growing vegetables and fruit.
