The many forms of human exploitation of animals

You are correct, Lark: Billions of animals die in our factory farms every year, versus perhaps hundreds of thousands in labs (I'm not as conversant with the latter figure as I used to be). And that's not even counting the animals abused and killed for fur, circuses, military testing, cosmetics/industrial testing, sport hunting, entertainment (e.g. bullfights, dogfights, cockfights), the pet industry, religious rituals, and all the illegal, awful things cruel people do in between.
There is something insidious, though, about medical testing: it's so coldly calculating, so sterile, so goal driven, that it evokes a sort of nightmarish, nazi-like scenario of shunted emotions and orderly destruction. I guess it's because doctors are involved, and they as scientists and learned people ought to be above such things as burning a rat or poisoning a chimp. If the man with the MD and PhD won't refrain from purposefully hurting an animal, then who will?
