Erm, no, they didn't.

St. Patrick was supposed to have brought Christianity to Ireland along with St. Bridget and various other saints; he died in 493 A.D.

The English first invaded Ireland in 1152 A.D. because the See of Dublin rejected the authority of the Archbishop of Canterbury; Pope Adrian gave his blessing for Henry the Second to invade Ireland to bring Dublin back into line.

The actual invasion proper took place on May the First 1169; Robert FitzStephen landed an army of about 400 men in Leinster. The rest is history.

It's unwise to call an Irishman a heathen and suggest that they were barbarians before the English turned up; they tend to take offence at it...

Cultural sensitivity and all that.
