Oh yeah, it's so hard to understand.

: : Yes, what a ridiculous, stupid and cruel thing to do. Im sickened by people who abuse animals in the name of "tradition" or "ancestry". Ignorant fools. Why dont they practice that behavior on their own children?

: Since when has the fact that something is 'ridiculous, stupid or cruel' been a reason to stop something being done?

Those all sound like good reasons to me. What more do you want?

It is no doubt from one point of view 'RSC' to wear a pair of leather shoes or eat a nice plump turkey especially fattened for the occasion. But is that a reason to stop doing it? Why do you wear leather shoes? Because that's what society does.

I don't wear leather shoes. And one can also make a distinction between killing an animal humanely, and smothering one.

: Aside from that exactly why do the indians do it. Mayhaps it has some strong religous significance for them as perhaps not eating your grandmother or killing your children has moral significnace for you (note i am not postulating moral relativism here).

Of course you're postulating moral relativism. People once sacrificed other people for religious reasons -- did that make it okay? They mutilate little girls' genitals around the world for cultural reasons. Is that okay too?

: If it doesn't seem right to you, maybe that's just because you don't understand it...

Let me try to understand what's going on: a baby eagle is stolen from its nest. It's tethered by the leg for months, so that this bird, meant to soar in the skies, can never fly at all. Lastly, it's slowly suffocated to death in corn meal. Golly, that's not very hard to understand, is it?
