Compassion for people AND animals

To all those who accuse animal rights activists of ignoring people, or placing animals above people, I'll simply say, once again, that it is possible to extend one's compassion to both people and animals.

To those who defend cruelty to animals based on ancient traditions, I say that much cruelty, to both people and animals, has been defended based on the arguments of "That's the way it's always been," or "It's part of our culture/religion," or "Who are you to interfere?" That won't wash anymore. You need to look at the situation from the victim's point of view, not the victimizers. Once you do that, it's hard to justify the cruelty, though for some, there will always be at least one good reason for inflicting pain on others. Fortunately, those people are in the minority, and their ranks are dwindling every day, thanks to the efforts of progressive movements such as the animal rights movement.
