: : and in fact, the US constitution doesn't even guarantee an individual citizen's right to own firearms. The 4th ammendment guarantees the right of the states to keep and arm a standing militia in peacetime, and the National Guard in each state fulfils this.

: Really? I thought it codified the right to 'own and bare arms', although that said I cant understand the US's veneration of the 'holy constitution', it was written during a civil war for God sake!! In the Irish Republic, which I believe is a more perfect model of liberal republic than the US, they have referendums on the Constitution all the time so that it can be drafted and redrafted.

Okay guys, here's the notorious 2nd Amendment to the U.S. Constitution in all its glory. As you can plainly see, it's a very poorly written, muddled mess which, ahem provides plenty of ammunition to both sides of the gun-control debate:

"A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed."

Golly, do you think the authors' could have been any more confusing? That's why I support repeal of the 2nd Amendment in its entirety: a) because it would ease the way for sensible gun control, and b) because it's an unholy affront to the English language.
