In the alternative, one can say that even if people ate cows, there's a huge difference between the old fashioned, "Old McDonald's" farm where the cow was raised in relatively humane conditions -- free to roam on the pasture, with a straw-filled barn to shelter in at night -- and today's factory farms, where cows are treated like things, not animals.
