Effective change through investment???

I recently had an interesting discussion with a friend of mine who says that anti-corporate demonstrations are relatively ineffective (particularly in the politically apathetic country that I live in) and at times self-congratulatory (ie. the "Buy Nothing Day" campaign sponsored by AdBusters). Without going into too much detail, he says that a possible alternative for change is to buy shares of stock of the corporations that you have grievances against and to aire (?) out those grievances at shareholder meetings. I happen to disagree with him over the relative ineffectiveness of demonstrations... I do, however, find this alternative intriguing (?: sorry, my spelling stinks *s*). Does anyone have any comments?
