Have you ever seen a canola plant?

: 60% of canola plants are genetically engineered, and these foods are not kept seperate from unmodified foods. Some of each type goes in to all the canola oil you buy or that goes into prepared foods.

Rapeseed oil was first made on American shores in 1988 by Procter and Gamble. Despite its alleged health benefits, P&G was faced with a problem: Nobody would want to buy a bottle of cooking oil labelled "rapeseed oil". Someone invented the name "canola oil" for this product, and sales took off.

Rapeseed comes from a plant similar to mustard plants. Just don't ask for canola plants; the made-up name applies to the oil, not the plant.
