Try not to buy out-of-season fruits & veg

The governments of debt-ridden Third World countries often face great pressures from the World Bank et al. to grow export crops so the money such crops bring in can be used to service these countries' debts. All too often, the results of these pressures are more hunger in the poor countries and more small farmers being removed from their land and/or forced to grow cash crops for export instead of food for their families.
When North Americans or Europeans run across fruits and vegetables that are obviously out of season in their own countries, that is frequently a clue that these items are the result of big international lenders' extortionate practices. Another good reason to support your local farmer!
