Yes there is a long list and tradition of heretical thinkers who have contributed to the furthering of science over superstition. From Brahe and Vico to Hume and Locke to Goethe, Heine, Schopenhauer...

Then just think of all the people influenced by Marx(ism) in all fields of human knowledge:

Diego Rivera, Freud, Huxley, Faulkner, Steinback, Gandhi, Bertrand Russell, Hemingway, Proust, Gagarin, Camus, Chagall, Gorky, Sartre, Prokofieff, Tupolev, Sholokov, Matisse, Lukacs, Eisenstein, G.B. Shaw, Capek, Kafka, Ortega Y Gasset, Gramsci, Luxemburg, Maiakovski, Bertold Brecht, Tolstoi, Picasso, Zapata, Che, Pasternak, Thomas Mann, Orwell, Makarenko, Pablo Neruda, etc., etc...

Not a bad list of folks to identify with IMO, eh comrade? Here's a page at my site which argues the historic implications of the October Revolution. It's important that whatever set-backs all of us on the revolutionary Left may be dealt, that we keep such a overall historical perspective in view. --K
