I haven't examined the Venezuelan flood situation in depth yet, but if it's anything like what happened to Honduras with Hurricane Floyd, then we can safely state that the clearcutting of hills to make room for cattle pasture contributed to the fatal mudslides.
As the saying goes, meat is murder.
