Malcolm Muggeridge once asked Graham Greene, the seminal writer of the Catholic Left, who would have won a Nobel Prize if it weren't for anti-Catholicism in the Nobel Committe, whether the [Catholic] Church would be better off under the Soviets or teh Americans. Greene responded,

"The Soviets merely destroy the body of the Church. The Americans destroy its soul."
