The relative parity the insurgent once had with thier government is now gone, particulary that of the American collonist fighting the British Imperial Red Coats (Red Coats? You wouldnt catch an army making a tactical error like that now adays would you?) and as far as the US civil war went it was a serious of pitched battles fought between to rival 'governments', the confederacy almost had recognition at an international level.
