: Its easy to say "if people were..." then follow this with any number of utopian systems, I can and do ocasionally fall into this trap. Much more difficult to say "people are..." and then consider what changes are not only beneficial but actually posible. That narrows the field.

No, there's as much evidence to show that peopel are social creatures who thrive as part of a collective, and who deteriorate when denied social existence. Read Colin Turnbull's book "The Mountain People" for a description of an ultra-individualistic society 9and one on teh brink of famine) that is slowly dying.
