Try Lenin and in particular, 'The state and revolution'. Although it has (or should have) plenty for you to disagree with, it can be used to find some of Marx and Engels original writings on the state as well as showing where socialist logic concerning the need for the state can go, with out apearing to step outside of libertarian ideals. (i.e. the theory practice gap and why one all powerful party to lead us is bollocks.)
