: People ought to get food and shelter and health care by virtue of being human, not based on hwo much moeny tehy havem (capitalism) or on how hard they work (Chinese-style 'austerity' socialism). However, socialism does not seem to cause a higher suicide rate, if it does then how do you expolain,

: 1) capitalist Japan has the world's highest suicide rate,

The reason for the high suicide rate in Japan is not due to capitalism. Japan had a high suicide rate even during its feudal and imperial systems. The reason for Japans high suicide rate is its cultural belief that it is more honorable to take ones own life than live a life of dishonor.

: 2) while America has been moving to the right steadily since 1980, the teenage suicide rate has increased.

Teenage suicide in American teens is largely due to the oppressive enviroment that gay teens are brought up in. Many of them have trouble accepting thei sexuality because there is a constant conflict between societies views on them. That is what leads to teen suicide.

: Also, I for one don't consider suicide an immoral act, being a neo- Hindu rather than a Christian.

I believe it is a personal choice and should not be illegal. However, the act of suicide is basically saying "This life is not worth living."
