NJ: But QX, can't you see that by calling Catholicism 'pre-Enlightenment thinking' you're already stacking the deck in your favor? It's like when a religious guy says, "let's compare religion and godless communism' or some such nonsense.

Qx: Not really, I just let them hang themselves with their own rope. Read John Ralston Saul's VOLTAIRE'S BASTARDS for more info on Jesuitical logic.

NJ: Catholicism is not 'pre-enlightenment', on teh contrary, it;s intensely relevant fro almost a billion people toay.

Qx: Especially since they've been suckered into donating so much of their money into the Vatican. Of course, let's not forget that the Vatican has been spending lots of money due to so many court judgements going against them for the behavior of their priests who are entrusted with the care of so many children.

The Catholic Church is a joke in Canada. They had such a grip on Quebecois society that dancing was prohibited until 1960. Then you can also try to tell native peoples here about how relevant Catholicism is and you might get a hearty laugh if not a snicker.

NJ: The fact that a philosophy is old does not make it invalid- I'm sure there has to be a name for thsi fallacy.

Qx: Yes, it's called overlooking the human costs of Catholicism (not to mention other forms of established religion). BTW, I can get along with "liberation theology" better than right wing religious fundamentalist worldviews but what the hell is a Communist doing defending Catholicism?

I know that some Catholic layworkers, priests and nuns do good work and there's no grounds for depreciating their efforts but then again in my neck of the woods they were instrumental in instituting cultural genocide.
