No, you're right, there was a regrettable ad hominem and you weren't responsible. however, you then played along with the ad hominem by defending French'y dad, which is what irked me.

Why? Religion isa deep source of social ethics, which iswhat politics/economics are largely about anyway, how to manage our resources in an ethical manner.
