: : : One would do well to be as critical of what is called 'empathy' and 'caring' as any other feeling displayed.
: : Why?
: All feelings, in and of themselves, only tell us about a persons emotional state, it might hint at their values.
: Whether its hate or love I would approach both with the same degree of inquiry.
: It seems most foolish to simply accept expressions of empathy on the face whilst deriding and scrutinising an apparent lack of it elsewhere.
(I wouldn't have asked had you done the rephrasing: "critical of what is called 'empathy'" to "expressions of empathy" in the first place. (Though even that may confuse the mechanism with its product - like criticizing the brain's function for producing ideas.) It is, after all, the lack of empathy that so enables racism, concentration camps, etc.)
