I suspect that much terrorism is the result of 'simple' revenge rather than any political tactic. It is a loud - "LOOK - WE EXIST" - a cry from the powerless against the powerful. Many States will use terrorist acts as a means of whipping their populations into patriotic obediance. The US press (& State Department) NEVER provide the historical roots, or any context of any terrorist's cause or demands. It suits those in power to treat terrorism as a blind, irrational force, beyond the possibility of rational discourse.

(Of course terrorism by the CIA, Kopassus, Latin American Death Squads, or other "legitimate" arms of various States are never so regarded - they are "The Defenders of Freedom")
