: @If we're going to talk anecdotes, I've read anecdotal evidence from crims who say that they would prefer not to use guns during burglaries, home invasions because it increases the risk of someone getting killed (an extra 20 years on a sentence) but feel they have to because the home owner might have one.

Don: Several studies have been done which suggest that criminals turn from home invasion to burglaries when there are large numbers of privatly owned guns. This makes sense. After all, the goal of the criminal is not to get into a gunfight where he might get hurt. It makes much more sense to him to lower his risk by breaking in while no one is home. If he decides to carry a gun and break in while people are home, his risk level remains high.
