The 8 hour workday. What are the odds?

I love reading these threads so much that sometimes I forget to participate. I wish I had more time to get more involved in these discussions, but, for now, I have to content myself with cheap little posts like this:

Why is the workday exactly 8 hours long for almost every salaried employee in the developed world? I understand why it not 12 or 16 hours (the strikes, worker revolts, and unionizing of the early twentieth century took care of that crap), but why isn't the work day 8.5 hours long? Or 7 hours? Or 5 hours? Or 2 hours? What is this 8 Sh_t? What an amazing coincidence that every job in the world takes exactly 8 hours per day to accomplish. Incredible!! Why isn't this fact recorded in Ripley's Believe It Or Not?
