Defenders of the 'free market' were exposed as phonies when the official word spread the nation: Gates is an 'old fashioned monopolist' using price-fixing, strong-arm tactics 'similar to those used [in] the turn-of-the-century days of smoke-filled railroad cars' (New York Times, 6 November 1999, sec. B, p. 4).On the debate board here, Doc and Frenchy took the lead in promoting Gates' products as the best ones in town. Now that the U.S. government has determined Microsoft 'charge[d] whatever it wanted for Windows without fear that price increases would reduce demand' (ibid.), one wonders how they feel being taken for an expensive ride. Care to continue to champion your hero after it's been established that he screwed you?
