Fanfare for the Common Herd

(note: I wrote this about four years ago, so I might rephrase it differently now, but what the heck...)

Fanfare for the Common Herd.

The world is filled with humdrum things,
Petty men with petty stings
Living without ever showing
That they care where they are going

All those numbers, nine to five
"We have to eat to stay alive"
Slaving on just for the sake
Of their two weeks of summer break

Nowhere is the question "Why?"
Conception of this thing called "I"
They shrink from ever thinking deeply
Why their lives they sell so cheaply

And anyone who finds things drear
Is frowned upon, looked on as "queer"
Disliked, shunned and soon cast out
For giving to these servants doubt

Do you ask the boss for leave
To sign a form before you breathe?
Get permission from the state
Just to use a public gate?

And of such people, they whose lot
Is feeding plants in some Crem. plot
Who will care then? Not the world,
Or those at whom this verse is hurled.

My friends, before you take such falls
Help me now tear down the walls
Contemplate the world around
And break the chains that have you bound.

Ask yourself now "What is real?"
What is it to see, to feel?
Think about just why you do
Everything they tell you to.

Gideon.
(note: Crem. is the usual abbreviation on the map for a crematorium)
