Third Gear

I guess I'm getting used to life in my small town. My wife Cher and I simultaneuosly came to the same conclusion when driving home from the only good resturant in our new little town. I said in my best hick drawl,

"Say Mabel, why don't we try out third gear 'an see how that goes?"

Not much call for third gear in Granite Falls, Washington. I mused at the prospect of rebuilding my transmission one day to find fourth gear completely unworn. A two gear town seems about right to me these days. I needed five in Los Angeles.

"Mabel, a man's got no call for four gears. Man wasn't made to have the world come at him so fast. Them city folk got five of 'em. 'magine that! An' ever one of 'em thinks they need it."

There might be a bit of wisdom there. The world flies circles around itself and leaves the two gear towns in the dust. But all the two gear folks do is shake off the dust and watch the world go by at breakneck speed.

"Mabel, how come they call it "breakneck" speed?"
