home schooling, public school system

I am not a strong supporter in what Daddio is saying. I mean may possible there is an illiteracy rate that is growing by the day, but I think we come down too much on parents and teachers. I'm only 22 years old and one thing I know is I never looked for guidance or support from any of my teachers and possibly that is because my parents spent quite a bit of time being involved in my life, mostly extra curricular. However I'm a strong believer that if a child wants to do something with his or her life it is their choice and all I think anybody needs is a little push in the right direction, and then they've got to take it from there. Drugs were most definatly around when I went to school and I won't even bother denying the fact that I did them, but at the same time I graduated on time, I'm going to University, and I'm planning on being a teacher. I think the only thing I will be able to do is my best, try to show them it is not the right road to travel, but children have a hard time saying no when everybody else is doing it, and especially when I think the majority don't think they actually have a problem.
As for the parental aspect, well,..... parents do, the majority that I have seen and experienced the best they can do. I come from a middle to slightly up class living status, schooling status, and all my friends have great parents and we all did drugs, and we all graduated, and we all are going to school now. I think all kids have their issues with their parents, I've most definatly had my fair share, but I usually dealt with them myself nobody really helped me. I think that's all chilren need to be taught is stenghth and after that it's their choice what their going to do with it.
