I remember hearing this story when I was growing up in America. Back then most goods bearing the label "Made in Japan" were considered inferior to those labelled "Made in USA". Hence it was claimed that Japanese goods were being exported via a small nearby island called Usa so they could legitimately bear the label "Made in USA". I doubt it's really a true story, though - probably just another urban myth.

McSpotlight: Well, there is the matter of the McDonald's supplier that called itself "100% pure beef!"; and registered it as a trade mark; thus McDonald's could buy things like brains and tails and hooves and still put "100% pure beef!" on the packaging...
