When I worked briefly as a cashier in retail (worst job I ever had) we weren't supposed to take $50 dollar bills or higher unless we were confident we could break them and not be giving away all of our change.

When a new cashier came onto their shift, they got exactly $50 in assorted change, including coins. After checking several customers out, there was enough money in the drawer to begin breaking the larger bills, but before that it was understood to ask for a bill of lower denomination.

Maybe McDonalds works in much the same way.. and perhaps at Noontime the morning shift had just left, closed their registers, and the restaurant's checkout process would be heavily disturbed by giving change for a $50.

I realize that it was inconvenient for you to have to run to the bank, but pizza boys and gas stations advertise they can't accept any bills larger than $20. Unless what one is buying costs more than $50, they really should, for the sake of easiness, carry smaller bills.

I can say this only because I've made it a practice of my own.
