Vegetarianism

One thing I don't understand about society is why they insist on killing animals needlessly? It has been shown numerous times that being a Vegetarian is healthy and good for you. ( take a look at Carl Lewis) I find it rather morbid and gross that people would rather kill and eat a rotting carcass of an animal, instead of fruits and vegetables. How can any one say it is OK ethically to eat and kill an animal? Why is it that raw fruits and vegetables are ok to eat, while eating raw meat is totally unacceptable? We live in a time and age where it is easy and safe to go off a meat diet, but why are we so relunctant to do so? I find nothing civilized in meat eating. To eat meat is barbaric, and is only acceptable in survival situations ( EG cannibalism is acceptable under certain conditions). In todays society it should not be acceptable. It is a gross and disgusting habit that needs to take the boot.
