Those examles are extreme, and limited to only a handful of my former employer's 40 franchised restaurants. The city was an overgrown college town of nearly 1 million people, so the drunks are everywhere. Many of those restaurants were built during more prosperous times in their respective neighborhoods, and the criminal elements (prostitues, gang members, et. al.) are there as the neighborhoods declined. Curiously, the restaurant where I worked was never robbed, while the McDonald's located 50 yards (46 m) down the street was held up about once per month. Every restaurant and grocery store has to keep their garbage locked in a special lockable trash bin or in a compactor to keep the homeless from scrounging. Yes, I worked in the pits of HELL, but some were actually much worse.
