Not the first time for this VERY funny rumor! I wish it could be made to stick, but it is false. Worm meat is simply too expensive to compete with dead cows(worm FOOD).
The rumor originated in Atlanta during the '70's after someone raising nightcrawlers for fishbait franchised out the operation and told a local paper he wanted to be"the McDonald's of worm farming." People didn't read all the way through and just saw "McDonald's" and "Worm farms" in the same article. Soon McD's sales dropped 30%+ in Atlanta and surrounding areas. McD's central (Ray Crook) ordered the local managers to stay off the tube and let the rumor run its course. One of them didn't listen and denied it on national TV, taking it nationwide and costing McD's millions. Finally the Krocster went on TV himself and said nightcrawlers were running $2-3 a pound and hamburger was 50 cents. Sales soon returned to normal, but Ray Croc could not bring himself to say "worms" until the day he died.
When I read of this in a book on McDonalds I almost fell on the follr from laughing so hard. A better rumor today would be that the meat was so filthy it had worms of its own(as in maggots). Perhaps a few beef and rice burgers shown to a newspaper in a story on meat extenders?
